In a shift away from circuit racing All-Inkl.com Munnich Motorsport has confirmed that it will run a two-car team in the FIA World Rallycross Championship this year. The squad will use Audi A3s, a second car joining the team’s first A3 that was used by team boss and lead driver Rene Munnich in World events in Germany and Italy last year.

“World RX will be our main programme this year and we will use this year to learn and then we want to fight for the title in 2016. We are pleased about the development of rallycross as a sport and the fact that we can develop our own car is what makes this championship so special,” said Munnich.

Petter Solberg has been keeping busy is recent weeks (as if he wasn’t busy enough) by driving his Escort MkII rally car. Son Oliver joined him in the recent Finnskogsvalsen rally, the pair netting third place in Oliver’s first outing as a co-driver. This weekend the Escort will do rallycross duty in the historic section of the rally X on Ice event at Holjes, and then it’s off to Rally Sweden Mrs Solberg will once again occupy the co-driver’s seat as the couple bid for a hat trick of wins in the event.

The first round of the 2015 Irish Rallycross Championship was won by Thomas O’Rafferty (Fiesta) who put in a quick and reliable run to begin the season perfectly. As the only Supercar driver to make it through the whole event, O’Rafferty won the Superfinal ahead of Pearse Browne who had earlier won the Supernational categiory in his BMW Compact. Willie Coyne (Corsa) pushed Browne hard throughout the final to place third ahead of Pat Ryan. Niall Murray placed fifth, just ahead of older brother Eoin, the pair starring the Stock Hatch final earlier in the afternoon where they were split by second place finisher John Ward.

After warm weather scuppered the first Rally X on Ice event at Orebro, round two is set to open the series at Holjes this weekend. There 14 RX Lites cars on the entry, including World RX event winner Andreas Bakkerud and GRC title holder Joni Wiman. There will also be an historic event that will feature Olle Arnesson, Stig-Olov Walfridson and an ‘Unknown driver’ in a Saab…

No official word from Marklund Motorsport about exactly what he do, but PG Andersson is set to the join the Swedish VW squad this year – and his own press release gave the clear impression it would be for a full World RX campaign…

In case you were ever in doubt about Tanner Foust’s petrolhead credentials, take a look at the film below and be reassured that he is the real deal.
